Many estates feature Historic Houses of international stature and central to Britain's important heritage tourism industry, most are maintained out of taxed income and with limited or no support from State resources.

Other properties have developed specific tourist attractions which contribute hugely to local economies as well as the maintenance of historic property within the estate. These include sporting and corporate activities, wedding and film locations and a host of associated ventures, including retailing.

Estates also offer accommodation ranging from fine hotels to holiday and let properties.
